Sugar Palm is commonly used as a term for species of palm trees that can harvest sugar. The official sugar palm is Arenga Pinnata.

Arenga sugar palm grows in mixed forest. From roots to leaves, every part of the tree is beneficial for people. Sugar palm can provide 60 different useful products, from food to bioethanol to furniture, and continuous income for the local farmers.

Arenga sugar palm requires no pesticide, no fertilizer, and little water, and is fire-resistant.  It can survive in drought and still producing sap.  With its deep root system, it can grow on steepest slopes, effective in preventing landslides, and improve the soil nutrient.

Sunshine to Sugar

Arenga sugar palm has large leaf structure that make it very efficient in capturing sunlight. The tree converts sunlight, rainwater and CO2 into sugar sap. The sap is tapped from the stems of the male flower bunches.

The sap has been traditionally used to make palm sugar, vinegar, and alcohol drinks. The sap ferments immediately and it is essential to preserve the sap freshness in order to make good quality palm sugar.

Palm sugar is probably the oldest form of sweetener known to mankind. A native ingredient in the South East Asian cuisine.

Masarang palm sugar factory in Indonesia produces a premium Arenga palm sugar with traditional tapping and modern sugar processing. Over 6,000 palm tappers make their twice-daily journey into the village forests to collect the sap from the Arenga palm and brought to the special designed zero-waste factory where the sugar is made.

Arenga palm sugar is pleasantly delicious with notes of caramel! It is not calorie-free but it has an amazingly low Glycemic Index under 30.
